I read an article which simply put defined them like this: Transgender: someone who feels that their gender role assigned at birth was wrong and wish to live the life of the opposite sex without undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Transsexual: someone who feel that their sex assigned at birth was wrong and wish to be anatomically the same as the opposite sex, while not necessarily wholely identifying with the gender roles.
